Digimon Story: Time Stranger peaked at over 80,000 players on Steam shortly after release, making it one of the most popular entries in the series so far. Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a follow-up to the 2015 title Cyber Sleuth and is available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam.
It was already expected that Digimon Story: Time Stranger would be a popular release. One early sign was developer Media.Vision’s warning that physical copies might be hard to find at launch due to overwhelming demand. The game was also highly wishlisted on Steam, further fueling expectations for a successful launch.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger Becomes a Steam Best-Seller
Launched on October 2, Digimon Story: Time Stranger on Steam quickly became one of the top five grossing games on the platform, reaching nearly 85,000 concurrent players, which is an impressive record for the series. For comparison, the previous installment’s Complete Edition peaked at around 4,000 players, indicating that the new release has achieved roughly a 2,000% growth. As for the game’s reception on Steam, Time Stranger currently holds an 85% positive rating, with an overall score of “Very Positive.”
For those unfamiliar, Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a monster-collecting RPG featuring turn-based combat and evolution mechanics similar to those in most mainline Pokemon games. What seems to have made this installment especially popular among fans is its deep monster-taming and customization system, along with a massive roster of over 450 unique digital creatures.
It’s worth noting that Digimon Story: Time Stranger‘s launch hasn’t been without controversy. While most Steam reviews praise its gameplay and call it one of the best turn-based games of the year, some players have accused publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment of misleading marketing. These players claim that the Ultimate Edition was advertised as an all-in-one package, including all DLC, but the released version is now missing several items that are being sold separately.
Those planning to pick up Digimon Story: Time Stranger should know that it’s available in three digital editions: Base, Deluxe, and Ultimate. The base game is priced at $70 USD, the Deluxe version at $100 USD, and the Ultimate edition at around $120 USD. There’s also a physical Collector’s Edition of Digimon Story: Time Stranger priced at roughly $200 USD, which is already open for waitlist registration. This premium package includes various physical collectibles and digital bonuses, such as figurines and episode packs.
