Since its launch, Helldivers 2 has been the action-packed third-person shooter of my dreams, and while it hasn’t always been a smooth ride, the game continues to pull me in with every new update. Helldivers 2 introduced Into the Unjust at the beginning of September, and it brought forth an onslaught of fresh new enemies.
Terminid variants like the Rupture strain of Chargers, Warriors, and Spewers have been harrowing enough, but monstrosities like Dragonroaches and Hive Lords kick everything up a notch. Ever since the game’s first few months, it’s been hard to predict what developer Arrowhead Game Studios is going to do next, and the brand-new Terminid types in Into the Unjust are further proof of the studio’s talent for crafting the unexpected. The enemy factions of Helldivers 2 help keep the game interesting, and while I’ve always thought a fourth faction was necessary, I may be changing my tone, at least for now.
Helldivers 2's Into the Unjust Update Showed Me That its Trio of Factions Still Has A Lot of Room to Grow Before Adding More
A Fourth Faction Can Wait
After the Illuminate faction was added in a surprise update at the end of last year, it was natural for many to assume that a fourth enemy group would be inevitable. Of course, this is still quite possible, but right now, I don’t think another faction is necessary. I’ve been pretty invested in the theory that a human rebel faction could come to Helldivers 2, and as compelling as that is, the current trio of enemies has plenty of unexplored potential before the variety grows stale.
Before Into the Unjust, I thought Helldivers 2 had explored most of what was possible with Terminids, Automatons, and the Illuminate, but I was clearly wrong. I definitely was not expecting flying and burrowing variants to be added to the equation, and now that the Terminids and Illuminate are even more terrifying after recent updates, Helldivers 2‘s Automatons are bound to evolve into more terrifying forms, too.
As the game continues to grow, Arrowhead Game Studios has made sure to make each update feel like a necessary step forward. Flying Terminids could have easily felt like a gimmick, but it just turns the dial up on Helldivers 2‘s heart-pounding action.
Since its launch, Helldivers 2 has been the action-packed third-person shooter of my dreams, and while it hasn’t always been a smooth ride, the game continues to pull me in with every new update.
Helldivers 2's Second Year Has Been One of its Biggest Yet
- Helldivers 2 finally came to Xbox on August 26.
- This new platform launch caused Helldivers 2 to rank fourth in August’s gaming top revenue.
Because of the huge surge in players, Helldivers 2 recently saw one of its biggest traffic boosts since its launch. With a brand-new roster of Helldivers 2 players added to the mix, the third-person shooter has hit a major milestone. Between this new platform launch and an onslaught of fresh Helldivers at the ready, Helldivers 2 may not lose its momentum as quickly as I had feared. There are still plenty of ways for the game to expand on the concepts, factions, and locations it’s already established, and it will be thrilling to see what Arrowhead Game Studios has planned next.
With The Game Awards set to arrive in December, it will be interesting to see if a fourth faction is announced in the same way that the developer revealed the Illuminate at last year’s event. It’s possible, but Arrowhead Game Studios has made it clear that developers want to keep players on their toes, so only time will tell.
